 Inquiring about Eye Tests

During your appointment, the Eyecare professional will conduct a variety of tests to check your vision as well as the health of your eyes. As a patient, you have a right to know what happens in each test and why it is performed. Some doctors explain exactly what they're doing and why; others conduct the tests in silence. Communications between you and your doctor are important, and the doctor should be willing to answer questions without hesitation.

What questions could you ask about tests your Eyecare professional is recommending?

In addition to the routine tests that are part of every eye examination, the doctor may recommend additional tests for further evaluation. If such tests are recommended, you have a right to know why that test is important. Here are some questions you could ask:

  • What is the recommended test, and why do you feel that I need it?
  • What will this test tell you about my vision?
  • What exactly does the test involve?
  • Are there any risks associated with the test?
  • Is it painful?
  • Is there anything I need to do to prepare for the test?
  • Are there any residual effects from the test, such as blurred vision?
  • Will I be able to drive following the test, or should I have someone else bring me home from the appointment?
  • When will I find out the test results?
  • What will the test cost, and is it covered by Medicare/Medicaid or my vision plan?
  • When should I have the test? Is it urgent?
  • What if I wait?
  • Will the test be done here, or do I have to go to another location?
  • Will you or another doctor conduct the test? If someone else does it, what are that person's qualifications?
